You are here: HomeFelonsFinding EmploymentDoes Walmart Hire Felons?

Finding work with a felony on your rap sheet is no easy task. Walmart has thousands of locations and millions of employees.

They have a high turnover rate, so they're probably looking for employees. Before you go after that interview, you'll want some clarity on how Walmart hires its employees:

  • Can a felon work at Walmart?
  • Does Walmart hire felons of any kind?
  • How do you apply?
  • How do you take the assessment?
  • Does Walmart do background checks?

Does Walmart Hire Felons?

In short: yes, a felon can get a job at Walmart. However, not all people with a felony can get a job at Walmart.

Does Walmart hire felons of any kind?

Walmart won't hire any felon. The following crimes are hard for hiring managers to overlook:

  • Violent crimes
  • Sexual crimes
  • Theft
  • Forgery

Violent and sexual crimes would take you off their list of potential hires. These are serious crimes that can't be overlooked.

Bottom Line: crimes involving theft or forgery are also a concern. Walmart wants employees they feel they can trust to work with money.

How do You Apply to Work at Walmart?

Step one of Walmart's hiring process is the application. Then there is an assessment test.

How do you fill out the application?

You can find an application for Walmart online. There is no box to identify you as a felon on a Walmart application, but you must still be honest about yourself and your history.

Make sure you look over your application for any mistakes or instances where you weren't honest. A background check will reveal any lies.

To better your chances of getting hired, be available. Your flexibility will increase your chances of landing an interview and getting a job.

Does Walmart hire felons for any position?

Some positions are ideal for those without a record.

For example, your background would likely make you ineligible to work in sporting goods because you might have to sell firearms and ammunition.

Walmart can hire felons for some entry level positions like:

  • Cashier
  • Sales associate
  • Cart attendant
  • Janitor
  • Overnight stocker
  • Stock room clerk
  • Distribution center clerk
  • Freight handler

Cart attendants, janitors, cashiers, and stockers are the best positions for a felon to apply.

These are the easiest jobs to get and require little training. Once you've finished the application, you can move on to the assessment.

How do you take the assessment?

The assessment asks for your reactions to the everyday situations of a Walmart employee. This assessment is Walmart's attempt to find out a little about the type of person you are.

The assessment consists of 65 multiple-choice questions. Each question will give you a statement. You must answer on a scale between 'Agree Strongly' and 'Disagree Strongly.'

Your application will find its way into one of two groups: applicants to consider and applicants to not consider. This grouping depends on your responses in the assessment.

Always use one of the options with the word 'Strongly.' It shows the company you have a strong opinion.

Strongly-opinionated applicants wind up on their list of applicants to consider for employment.

How Should You Approach the Interview?

Walmart may have dozens apply for one position at any given time. They usually interview only three of those applicants.

Following your submission, Walmart will contact you if they want to interview you.

This downtime gives you a chance to learn more about Walmart, its history, and its values. Interviewers will ask why you want to work at Walmart.

They'll ask how you would handle customers and supervisors with whom you disagree.

The beginning of the interview is your time to shine. Share your strengths and weaknesses, and focus on your skills, dependability, and willingness to learn.

Before the interview comes to a close, the interviewer will ask if you have any questions. Address your felony at this time.

Explain what happened, but keep it brief. What's most important to the interviewer is that you're not living in the past.

They will want to know what steps you've taken to move on and better yourself.

Come prepared with a written statement explaining this. Focus your energy on what you've done since your conviction.

Attach any certifications or awards and a few letters from people who can speak for your good character.

Note: writing the letter will help prepare you for speaking about it. Save this letter for the end of the interview. Ask the interviewer if they have any questions, and thank them for their time.
